Azo dyes and copper compounds thereof.- Substantive dyeing o-carboxyazo dyestuffs containing copper are made by causing an agent yielding copper to act on the dyestuffs obtained by coupling tetrazotized 4 : 4<1>-diaminodiphenyl- 3: 31-dicarboxylic acid with two similar or dissimilar molecular proportions of an aminonaphthol disulphonic acid or a nuclear substitution product thereof, acids substituted in the amino group being excluded. The o-carboxyazo dyestuff may also be prepared in the presence of a coppering agent with the exclusion of a water soluble complex nitrogenous copper compound, or the copper compound may be produced in the dye-bath. Mainly blue and grey shades are obtained on cotton and viscose. In examples, (1) the dyestuff benzidine - 3 : 31 - dicarboxylic acid # 1: 8- aminonaphthol-2 : 4-disulphonic acid (2 mols) is treated with copper sulphate, (2) the tetrazo compound is coupled with H-acid in presence of sodium carbonate, pyridine and copper sulphate, (3) the dyestuff benzidine-3: 31-dicarboxylic acid #2 : 8-aminonaphthol-3 : 6-disulphonic acid (2 mols.) and the dyestuff benzidine-3 : 31-dicarboxylic acid @ 1 : 8-aminonaphthol-2: 4-disulpho acid. @ acid. are coppered as in (1).
