Leakage-preventing devices. - A centrifugal pump has an impeller 31 on a shaft 3 which passes through the casing on the opposite side to the pump inlet, and the impeller is provided with auxiliary blades 39 to prevent leakage. A circular groove 41 is made in the impeller at the base of the auxiliary blades and this receives the projection 25 on the cylindrical body 24. The outer surface of the projection 25 has a groove 26. If any fluid leaks past the impeller towards the shaft, it is caught by the groove 26 and directed towards the auxiliary blades 39. The impeller hub 33 is machined to form a smooth surface, and the member 24 has an inwardly extending shoulder 34 which serves as an abutment for packing material. The shaft 3 is supported in a ball bearing, the outer ring 12 of which is clamped to the ring 11 by rings 15, 16. The outer surface of the ring 11 is threaded to engage the inner surfaces of rings 9, 46, the latter being an extension of the body 24. The clearance between the impeller surface 42 and the casing can be adjusted by rotating the ring 9, while the clearance between the impeller surface 44 and the surface on the body 24 can be adjusted by rotating the ring 46.
