Abstract

335,161. Gratze, E. V. Hayes-. June 13, 1929. Electrodes; supporting; connections; chromium, depositing.-In electro-plating an article with chromium using anodes of lead or lead alloy, auxiliary cathodes are employed to prevent excessive deposit on salient parts of the article. Insulating shields may be used in addition to deflect the ions and to prevent accummulation of pockets of gas. An arrangement for plating a concave article x, Fig. 3. comprises anodes a, a<1>, insulating shields c and auxiliary cathodes b electrically connected with the article a. Modified arrangements for plating articles of various shapes are described. The electrodes and shields may be movable and the electrolyte may be circulated mechanically or thermally. The auxiliary cathodes may constitute a frame on which the articles to be plated are mounted. In plating a perforated plate, an auxiliary cathode of sheet form is mounted on the side remote from the anode. An arrangement for coating the outer frame x, Fig. 9, of a motor car radiator comprises an anode a, shield c, auxiliary cathodes b, and resilient plates c<2> for closing the tubes x<1>. The tubes may be filled with water to which glycerine is added to increase the density above that of the bath.
