Feeding webs. - In web-feeding apparatus in which the web hangs in a loop between feeding devices operating at different speeds, and a member resting in the loop actuates trip devices for controlling the stopping and starting of the feeding device supplying the loop, the trips operate or include one or more electric switches which control (a) a clutch in the feed drive or (b) a motor driving the feed supply device. The apparatus is particularly for use in feeding rubber strip, or rubberized fabrics such as are employed in making tyres. In one form the web 1 is fed to a loop 5 by a feed roller 4 which is normally driven so as to supply the web at a greater rate than it is withdrawn by the web-using apparatus. A roller 6 resting in the loop and carried by endless chains 11 is guided in slots 9 in the frame 8 and is adapted, at the limits of its movements, to actuate a pair of arms 16, 17, pivoted to the frame 8. The arms 16, 17 are connected by a link 15 engaging a lever 19 adapted to actuate alternately a pair of switches 22, 23 to control circuits adapted respectively to stop and start the feed roller 4 either by controlling the feed drive motor or by controlling a solenoid for actuating a mechanical clutch in the drive to the roller. In another form, the roller 6 directly actuates a switch at each end of its travel. In this form also the chains 11 are dispensed with. If the fabric is provided with a lining web, the feed roller 4 may be omitted, the web with its lining passing over guide rollers and the lining then passing separately to a rewinding reel driven and controlled similarly to the roller 4, the web thus being fed to the loop by the pull on the lining material. In any of the forms described a safety switch may be arranged above the upper trip device, adapted, if the upper trip should fail to act, to be operated by the roller 6 to stop the drive of the device withdrawing the web from the loop.
