Abstract

333,056. Jackson, L. Mellersh-, (Kelsey- Hayes Wheel Corporation). Aug. 9, 1929. Wheels. - A vehicle wheel hub shell for attachment to a rim by wire spokes is formed in two parts, a barrel part 7 and flange part 8 which are subsequently united by ordinary welding, the barrel blank being cut and cupped from strip metal 34, Fig. 4, the cup being then elongated in the dies and then bulged out to shape 11, Fig. 7, by internal fluid pressure 12. A punch 44, Fig. 7, also shears the bottom of the cup but not quite through, so that the pressure oil is retained until poured out, after which severance is made. The hub flange is sheared from strip 47, Fig. 8, and shaped and the centre is punched out as shown. The edge of the centre hole is machined to prevent cracking when subsequently flanged as in Fig. 9, in which dies form an outer annular rib 24 with spaced elongated bosses 22, radial ribs 21<1> and circular depressions 25. The blank is then restruck in dies, Fig. 10, the bottom of the circular depressions &c. punched out by punch 57 and the outer edge of the blank &c. trimmed off by shearing. The two blanks are then welded, the weld being machined off and the whole hub is restruck in dies, Fig. 11. The hub is then clamped in a lathe, Fig. 12, where the external weld marks are removed, the internal ring face 16 is turned up and the hole in the hub is also turned up. A punch 63, with work holder 62, locating pilots 65, Fig. 13, and with indexing mechanism, forms the spoke holes in the outer flange, countersinking them from the inner side to form spoke seats 23 in the arcuate walls of the bosses 22 in the annulus 20. Then the outer side walls of the bosses 22 are punched-and countersunk from the inner side in similar apparatus. In Fig. 14 spoke holes &c. with countersunk seats 15 and bosses 4 are formed by punch and die 67, with work holder 66 and pilots 70. The hub is then secured by clamps 72, Fig. 15, to a rotated ring 71 so that cutters 75, 76, 77 trim the respective parts as shown. Clamps 72 are moved to clamp by levers operated by fluid pressure actuated piston.
