Abstract
1,152,673. Making hubs. FUCHS G.m.b.H. 6 Sept., 1966 [15 Sept., 1965], No. 39796/66. Heading B3A. [Also in Division B7] A light metal, e.g. aluminium or magnesium alloy, wheel hub is made from cylindrical ingot by die pressing the ingot to form a dish-shaped member with a circumferentially extending flange 6 on the wall 5 and U-shaped cross-section spokes 7 on the closed end, the pressed part being thereafter subjected to a shaping operation wherein the upper portion of the wall 5 is bent outwards to form a well-base rim, and the portions 11 between the spokes are removed. The spokes 7 have a trapezoidal cross-section in the plane perpendicular to the hub axis and the sides of the spokes have ribs 8. The wellbase rim is formed by bending the upper end of the wall 5 outwards (5<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 7 (not shown), so that it co-operates with the flange 6. The parts 11 between the spokes are removed by machining or stamping and the surface of a flange 9 between the spokes is machined perpendicular to the hub axis. The hub is bored (14), Fig. 9 (not shown), and the wellbase rim rolled between pressure rolls at room temperature to form a shaped rim (18), (19), Fig. 12 (not shown). The rims (19) of the well are made to have a greater thickness than the base (18). After this final shaping the hub is bored (21), (22) for reception of a tyre valve and wheel retaining bolts respectively. Examples of suitable light metal alloys are given.
