Abstract

332,993. Coe, H. S. May 28, 1929. Density separators; discharging.-A separator for treating liquids is supplied with an additional liquid to prevent clogging of the discharge ports, and to maintain a zone of fluid treating material adjacent the periphery of the rotary chamber. The shaft 11. Fig. 1, supported by the bearing 12 carries the separating chamber enclosed by two truncated conical sections 16, 17 which are connected by flanges 18. Conical liner plates 47 are arranged in the chamber. and a central tube 24 conveys the liquid to be treated to the bottom of the chamber. Discharge ports 28, 29, 30 are provided and the ports 28, 29 may be rendered adjustable by the lazy tongs 31 and sliding ring 32. The ports 30 are formed in pipes 34 provided also with discharge ports 36 at their inner ends. At the lower end of the chamber is a section 19 which acts as a pump to force liquid up through the space 38 between the plate 37 and the wall 17. The section 19 is provided with vanes 41, and the separating chamber may be formed with pockets leading to the discharge ports 30. The separator is placed in a tank 52, so that the lower end of the section 19 is immersed in fluid. The liquid to be treated is supplied through the central tube 24, and the separated constituents are discharged through the ports 28, 29 to the pipes 56, 57 and through the ports 30, 36 into the casing 52. The discharge of the heavy constituent through the ports 30, 36 is aided by the liquid, which may be discharged material, pumped up through the section 19 and passage 38. This prevents clogging at the ports and maintains a zone of treated material in the chamber so that no untreated material is discharged. The rate at which this liquid is supplied may be varied to compensate for wear on the discharge ports 30 ; the variation is obtained by regulation of the ports 43 which can be adjusted in position by screwing. The level of the flexible discharge outlet 58 from the casing 52 is adjustable. In a modification where the ports 28 are not used, clean liquid is discharged through the ports 29 and colloidal matter is discharged through the ports 30, 36. Water is supplied to a vessel surrounding the section 19 to be pumped through the space 38. The colloidal matter passes into the casing from which it is removed by a conveyer.
