Abstract

332,569. Morse, W. G. Feb. 23, 1929. Gravity-separation apparatus.-In a process for recovering oil and grease from substances coated with or holding oil, for example refuse from garages, water is added and the mixture is caused to flow slowly down an inclined surface and simultaneously to spread out laterally and then to flow on to the surface of a body of water, so that a layer of oil collects thereon. Water carrying oil, grease and dirt is delivered from a sump Q through a pipe P to the apex of a triangular table L, which may be corrugated or ribbed, so that as the mixture passes down to a chamber D it is spread out and the flow retarded. Oil separates as a floating layer in the chamber D, dirt J settles and the water passes between partitions B, C into a chamber F. Some oil separates in the chamber F and the water is discharged through a semi-circular passage H<3> and pipe H<2>. Each chamber is provided with an outlet G for oil, and the chamber D has a gas release pipe K. A steam heating pipe R may be fitted beneath the table L.
