329,501. Austin, T. D., and Dewhurst, C. May 14, 1929. Air, treating.-An apparatus for extracting smoke and other solid particles from air, is adapted to be suspended in the atmosphere to be clarified, and has a collecting chamber 4 containing a fan 11 driven by an electric motor 12. The chamber tapers from its central portion adjacent to the supporting arms 5, to the inlet 6 and the outlet 7. Above the chamber 4 is the separating chamber 8 the wall of which is corrugated; blades 14 on a spindle rotated by the electric motor 15 are arranged in this chamber 8. The blades are preferably corrugated and a web of wire gauze 18 is fitted at the end of the blades, while webs 19 of similar material are fitted between the blades. The dirty gas is drawn by the fan 11 through the inlet 6 and passed through the chamber 4 to the spaces between the blades 14. It is cleaned by centrifugal action assisted by the filtering effect of the webs 18, 19, and the clean gas is passed through the outlet 20 which may consist of another filter. Additional outlets 21 may be provided. The surfaces within the apparatus may be coated with a mixture of vaseline, glycerine, and graphite to hold the separated dirt; wire gauze, expanded metal or the like may be fitted to provide a carrier for the adhesive material. The apparatus may carry lamp holders 22, or it may be otherwise combined with lamp fittings.
