Abstract

329,370. Hammond, C. F., and Shackleton, W. Feb. 16, 1929. Manually actuated multiple-way valves.- A proportioning - valve for a furnace or fuel burner comprises cut-off elements for the constituents actuated at will by a common control means associated with a calibrated cam device adapted to produce a differential adjustment of such valve elements for the purpose of preserving correct proportioning of the fluid flow over the whole range of adjustment between the commencement of opening and the fully open position. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the control elements comprise ports b, c in a cylindrical member a adapted to be moved against the action of a spring k by fluid pressure acting on a piston under the control of a manually operated auxiliary valve. The upper part of the member a is formed with a cam groove l engaging a roller n<1> on a pin n carried by a sleeve rotatably adjusted by a milled head o acting through a. worm and worm wheel o<3>. The ports b, c are shaped so that during the combined rotary and reciprocating movement of the member a the width of the port b is reduced in advance of the port c. In a modification the cam groove is formed in the surrounding casing and the pin secured to the valve member below the port c. In a further modification the ports are formed in separate elements, held against rotation and coupled together by a screw and nut or other mechanism controlled by the cam. The two elements may be rotatably connected together, the one being held against rotation while the other is rotated by the cam during reciprocation. In the form shown in Fig. 8 the control elements are formed as needle valves s, s<1> and are moved against the action of springs y by cams t on a common shaft t<1> rotated by a hand operated worm 1 In a modification the valve spindles are provided with cam grooves engaging fixed pins and are rotated by a hand actuated pinion engaging pinions on the valve spindles. The outlet conduits b<2>, c<2> are provided with non-return valves comprising a series of spring fingers g mounted on a ported cylindrical seat. Detachable covers for these valves are held in place by a common bridge e<2> secured to a pillar f and having bifurcated ends e<6> engaging flanges on the covers.
