Abstract

Emulsions, making; ointments or salves.- Petroleum jelly, paraffin, lubricating oils, fatty oils and other substances of a fatty or oily nature are combined, preferably during heating, with 0.1-10 per cent of one or more phytosterins to form compositions capable of absorbing water, water solutions or substances such as glycerine, the absorbed substance being dispersed in the base. The products are applicable to the manufacture of ointments, medical and cosmetic salves, lubricants, paints, and food-products such as margarine. The phytosterins may be oxidized before addition or air may be passed through the liquified base during the addition in order to oxidize the phytosterins in situ. Examples refer to the addition of 3 per cent of a phytosterin to petroleum jelly, paraffin or lubricating oil, the mixture being heated, if desired, to 180‹-200‹C while stirring and passing air therethrough. The products are capable of absorbing two to three times their weight of water or water-solutions of substances such as glycerine, aluminium subacetate, silver nitrate or iodine. Petroleum jelly containing 50 per cent of a phytosterin is stated to be capable of absorbing four times its weight of water; in place of water, glycerine, aqueous alcohol or other substances may be absorbed. The preparation of salve bases, capable of absorbing water, water solutions or other liquids, by the addition to petroleum jelly, paraffin &c. of oxycholestrin or oleic acid is referred to.
