Producers.-The shaft of a water-gas generator 1, filled with coke, has an annular combustion chamber 2 surrounding the lower part only of the shaft, which is made relatively thin. " Blow " gases preferably pass downwards through the coke, entering the combustion chamber bv way of ports 6 at its lower end, leaving it at its upper end through 10 to a regenerator. The annular space, may be divided into flues bv partitions through which may pass tuyeres 4. Secondary air for combustion of the blow gas may be admitted to the flues by tuyere 5. 70 per cent of the " run " gases may leave through 8 and the remainder preheats incoming coke before reaching the outlet.
