Springs, arrangement of.-In vehicle suspension - systems in which the resistance of the spring system increases at a greater rate than the deflection, an elastic tension or compression element cooperates with a pivoted lever, the parts being so arranged and proportioned that, as the load increases, the perpendicular from the pivot of the lever on to the line of action of the spring increases, while further, the product of the load and the ratio of a small vertical deflection to the corresponding small change of load remains substantially constant. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an elastic, tension member 2 is pivoted at one end to the frame 1 and at the other end to the lever 4 which is also pivoted to the frame and is provided with an additional arm 5 to the end of which the axle of the wheel 6 is secured. In a modification, shown in Fig. 4, an elastic compression element 9 is pivoted to the vehicle frame at one end to a lever 4 at the other end, the two being both pivoted directly to the axle 7. Several modified arrangements of the elastic element and the lever are shown in the drawing. Frictional vibration-dampers may be combined with the springs or with the pivots.
