Abstract
324,562. Marks, Sir G. C., (Harris-Seybold-Potter Co.). March 11, 1929. Sheet - separators.- Sheets are separated from piles and fed to the feed rolls 13 of a printing or like machine by means of suction separators 43 movable in suction cylinders 34 against the action of springs 37 which raise the cylinders after the sheet adheres thereto. Separators 43 acting on the front and rear edges of the pile are shown, and in the normal position the tubes 36 of the suckers 43 are kept raised by the springs 37 which act on pistons 35 moving in the cylinders 34. Each cylinder 34 is connected at its lower end to a bye-pass tube 42 connected to an upper chamber 41 fitted with a pipe 45 which intermittently lowers the air pressure in chamber 41. A controlled narrow passage 38 allows air to pass slowly from cylinder 34 to chamber 41, and when the air pressure is reduced in chamber 41 the pressure at the lower end of cylinder 34 falls more rapidly than the pressure at the upper end, and the piston 35 is drawn down to cause the nozzle 43 to contact with the sheet. The piessure at the top of cylinder 34 is gradually reduced, and the spring 37 which is compressed by the lowering of the piston, finally raises the piston and with it the separated sheet. The rear nozzles 43 coact with rising and falling combing rollers 6 operated from a cam 20 on a shaft 19 driven by gearing from a shaft 16, and a pressing device 7 blows air under the separated sheet. The front nozzles 43 are mounted in a cylinder, which is reciprocated bodily by a connecting-rod 32 and a crank. The crank is driven by bevel gearing from the shaft 16.
