Solidifying.-Carbon dioxide snow is formed in an open-ended shell or chamber i, Figs. 1, 3, held between end members c; the charged shell is removed from between the ends and the snow is compressed to ice in the shell. Liquefied gas is supplied by a pipe d on one of the heads fitted with a measuring chamber h<1> and an inlet valve h, and leading, when the shell is in position between the ends, to a pipe p on the shell with inlets o. A perforated plate c' and gauze on the end afford entry of the liquid to the shell, and a pipe f leads surplus gas to a return main. Eye-bolts j<1> on the shell allow it to be lifted by tackle k. The ends are mounted to slide on guide rods b, and are pressed into engagement with the shell by cams actuated by levers n. The shell may comprise an outer case and an inner mould, the space between the two being open to the mould to allow an insulating layer of snow to be formed. The shell when full is carried to a ram where one end is supported by a rigid wall while a loose plate is forced into the other end, compressing the snow to an iceblock of the required size. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the chamber i is held vertical during charging, and after charging and release of the lower end l is slid on to a counterweighted table t and the snow is compressed by a footactuated counterweighted ram r. Further depression of the ram ejects the ice-block which is lowered on the table to the level of a travelling belt on to which it is slid sidewise. The shell may contain a mould fitted with a corrugated paper carton in which the block is formed ready for transport.
