Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture solid dry ice having superior cooling power in a high yield by directly cooling pressurized liquefied CO2 with a liquefied gas of a temp. lower than the subliming temp. of CO2 gas.
CONSTITUTION: By actuating an upwards and downwards moving mechanism 12, 15 of the molding apparatus, piston 13 and bottom plate 9 are lifted up to make the interior of molding section 11 airtight. Valve 20 is opened to fill CO2 gas in the gaseous phase part of storage tank 1 into section 11, and a refrigerant such as liquefied nitrogen is fed into cooling jacket 18 from refrigerant inlet 16 to cool section 11 to ≤-20°C. By opening valve 3, liquefied CO2 stored in tank 1 under pressure is introduced into section 11. Valve 3 is then closed and the cooling is continued to solidify the liquefied CO2. The resulting dry ice may be pressed by lowering piston 13. After the solidification valve 20 is closed, valve 22 is opened to release a very small amount of residual CO2 gas, and the solid dry ice is taken out by lowering the mechanisms 12, 15. Thus, high density dry ice of glassy crystal is obtd.
