Abstract
322,461. Paterson, W., (Middendorp, D. J.). Sept. 4, 1928. Turbidometers.-The turbidity of a liquid is estimated by causing a beam of light to be projected through the liquid along an extended path and observing the distance to which it penetrates. The apparatus comprises a casing a containing the liquid and having opposite walls provided with reflectors b, c inclined at a small angle to each other. Light from a source. e enters the casing through a transparent area d of the mirror b and passes to and from in a zig-zag path so that each reflectors forms a number of images of the source e. The images in the reflector b are observed through a transparent area d<1> at the same level as the area d but displaced laterally therefrom, and the turbidity of the liquid is estimated by the number of images which can be seen. To enable a numerical value of the turbidity to be obtained a slidable diaphragm plate f may be provided which is moved until it appears to intersect the last visible image. This plate is provided with an external pointer moving over a scale g on the casing.
