Abstract

321,473. Robinson, T. W. S., and Ganahl, C. de. Aug. 15, 1928. Grant of Patent opposed. Hydrocarbons, dis. tilling.-Heated hydrocarbon material, such as that issuing from cracking devices, which is liable to deposit coke &c., is subjected to a cooling operation in which contact with the surfaces of solid members is substantially prevented until the temperature of the material is reduced below that at which the deposition will be promoted by such contact, generally below about 600‹ F. The hot material, injected into a chamber 1, Fig. 1 through a jet 2, is surrounded by cooling liquid from a tubular sprayer 5 which may form either a cylindrical or conical screen or distribute it uniformly as a shower over the whole cross sectional area of thechamber. Alternatively, the heated hydrocarbon. may be introduced at the top of the chamber as a conical jet disposed at one side of the vertical. axis thereof, the cooling liquid being introduced as a similar jet disposed at an acute angle to thehydrocarbon. jet. In another modification, the upper portion 8, Fig. 5, of the chamber is wider than the lower portion and the cooling liquid trickles down the walls covering them completely and only mixing with the, heated material when the latter reaches a. zone adjacent the base of the chamber.
