Abstract

320,311. May, J. W. March 22, 1929. Connecting uppers to insoles and soles. - A Mc-Kay sewn shoe is made with a flexible sole by placing an insole comprising two parts, a ball portion 1, Figs. 2 and 3, narrower than the last, and a toe portion 2, of the same size as the last, detachably connected together, e.g. by a strip of tearable material 25, on a. metal faced last. The edges of the lasted upper are secured by ordinary lasting tacks 12, Fig. 3, to the toe portion 2 of the insole and to a shank 7, which extends from the heel to the convex portion of the sole at the waist and the full width of the last, and by means, suck as headless tacks 15, to the body or ball portion 1 of the insole. The outsole is then sewn to the upper by stitches which exterd through the toe portion 2 of the insole and the shank 7 but not through the narrower portion 1 of the insole, which can then be detached, with its securing tacks 15, from the upper. The tce portion 2 of the insole is preferably skived as shown in Fig. 2, to form a smooth surface with the outsole.
