Abstract

318,987. Keen, T. A., and Smith, H. M. Sept. 14, 1928, [Convention date]. Dog-racing apparatus.-An electrically - propelled lure carriage runs upon a single lower rail and is steadied bv an upper rail, the circuit passing through both rails. The two carriage wheels 34 mounted in side plates 32 run on a lower rail 23, the arm 36 of the lure 37 having a portion 39 upon which is a fixed insulating ring 41 forming a bearing for a wheel 40 which bears against the upper rail 26. An insulation disc 42 separates this wheel from the side plate 32. The current, which is direct current of low voltage. passes from a central storage battery to rail 26, wheel 40, thence by any suitable means to terminal 43 of motor 44 and from a second such terminal to wheel 34, rail 23, and back to the battery. The motor 44 drives the rear wheel 34 by bevel gears 47, 48, the rear wheel 34 driving the front wheel 34 by chain and sprocket 50, 51, 52. At the end of a race a points switch deflects the carriage to a siding having the braking means of Fig. 10. A portion 90 of the upper rail 26 is hinged at 91 and pressed downwardly by springs 93 so that the converging rails 90, 23 offer increasing resistance to the carriage wheels. This brake is raised for release by a cord 94. A gate which is moved across the course at the close of a race consists of a section 71 of the inner fence 70, Fig. 7, which is pivoted about a post 73 against spring 76 by an integral lever 75 and a cord 79 operated from the judge's box. Pulling on a second cord 81 causes a lever 82 and a part 74 to rotate. This part 74 is pivoted to the part 71 and when thus operated it is rotated to complete the closure of the course. By pulling on a third cord 84 a pivoted flap in the section 74 is raised and automatically propped up. When the lure arm passes, it knocks away this prop and the flap completes the closure acros the course.
