Abstract

318,521. Standard Oil Development Co., (Assignees of Lewis, W. K.). Sept. 4, 1928, [Convention date]. Mineral and tar oils; motor spirit.-Low-boiling non-viscous hydrocarbon oils-such as gasolene and naphtha are improved, especially as regards the formation and deposition of gum, by addition of less than 5 grams per gallon of pyrogallol. In an example 0.10 gram of pyrogallol is added to 1 gallon of cracked naphtha. The pyrogallol may be added as a solution in absolute alcohol, ether, or other solvent miscible with the oil. The oil should be neutral or slightly alkaline. The Specification also shows the effect of using 0.10 gram per gallon of phloroglucinol, resorcinol, phenol, or hydroquinone. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the use of a soluble substance containing a hydroxylated benzene ring, and also specifies thymol as such a substance, and benzene as a suitable solvent of the hydroxycompound. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 312,774.
