Abstract

311,531. Haddan, R., (Scott & Williams, Inc.). April 19, 1928. Knitted - fabric sewing- machines.-In the manufacture of hosiery, the stocking is transferred from the knitting machine to a carrier comprising a pair of hinged semi-circular segments which are then superposed so that the loops of one half can be doubled with those of the other by a stripping device, ready for their union by a sewing apparatus. The divided web carrier 1, 2 with the fabric W of the stocking as received from the knitting machine thereon is placed in the cylindrical holder 35, a pin 116 thereon being registered in a slot 117 of the holder. A cam drum 37 is given an initial rotation of one tooth, corresponding to a missing tooth, by a starting lever 94 so that a reciprocating pawl 39 carried by a slide 40 can rotate it step by step under the action of the eccentric 41 on the main shaft 25. A cam lug 69 on the drum at once engages the dog 66, causing a bevelled toe 20 of a lever 60 to thrust through the opening 21 of the part 1 of the web carrier, withdrawing the latch 18 from the pin 19, Fig. II, to unlock the segments. A roller on the short arm of a lever 51 follows a cam groove 54 on the drum and causes the toothed segment 55 on the longer arm to rotate the pinion 56 and shaft 57, whereby the segment 1 of the carrier is swung over the segment 2, to bring the loop carrying points 4 exactly over the points 5, a conical pin 118 and socket 119 ensuring perfect alignment. As the drum continues to rotate under the action of the pawl 39, a lever 78 is moved downwardly through levers 82, 49 and cam track 52. Its toe 81 engages a plate 11 sliding in the carrier 1 to cause the stripper 8 to transfer the loops of the points 4 to the points 5, so doubling the loops ready for sewing. The lever 78 is then displaced laterally by the bell crank lever 76, link 77, lever 50 and cam track 53, to engage the plate 11 in its slot 80. to lift the stripper to its normal position on its upward swing. The bell crank 76 then moves the lever 78 away from the plate 11 and out of the path of the segment 1 ready for its return from above the segment 2. The segment 1 is returned by a reverse movement of the lever 51 as the roller follows the cam track 54. The toe 20 of the lever 60 is withdrawn from the opening 21 by a cam lug 70 on the drum. The compound lever 86 is next rocked by a cam lug 85 on the drum, causing a projection 88 on its free end to rock a lever 89, Fig. VII, to shift the pulley 31 on the sewing machine shaft 92 so that its pin 90 engages the stud 91 and gears the pulley 31 to the shaft, putting the machine S into action to stitch together the doubled loops on the points 5. Shears 95, 96, Fig. VI, are operated by the eccentric 41 to cut the trailing line of stitches after the sewing is completed. Lifter bars 110, Fig. VI and XV, are then elevated by slots 113 in the bedplate 34 to lift the bars 11, 14 to raise the strippers 8, 12 to remove the fabric from the carrier. The bars 111 then displace the carrier from its holder 35, one bar being longer than the other to tilt the carrier to prevent its falling back. The pulley 31 of the sewing machine S is restored to its original position after completion of the sewing. By this time, the drum 37 has made a full rotation and the pawl 39 has reached the missing tooth, so that the next rotation must be initiated by the starting lever 94.
