Abstract

316,357. Haddan, R., (Scott & Williams, Inc.). May 3, 1928. Knitted fabric sewing- machines.-A machine for uniting knitted webs such as the toe pockets of seamless hosiery produced on circular knitters, has means for the convenient application and removal of the transfer ring carrying the loops to and from the carrier and for moving the ring and carrier for proper co-ordination with the sewing machine which unites the loops. Assuming the machine to be at rest and the sleeve 65 of the carrier 20 elevated as shown in Fig. V, the transfer ring R, carrying the loops of the knitted fabric on its points P, is placed in the sleeve 65 and locked therein with the end of the fabric trailing down within the carrier. The finger lever 110 is then moved to shift the trigger 113, causing the blank space 109 of the control drum 40 to be advanced and resulting in ihe commencement of the intermittent rotation of the drum by the pawl 107. During the first movement of the drum, the pin 87 trips the lever 85, Fig. VI, causing the lever 81 to be rocked from the full-line position to the dotted line position of Fig. V so that its roller 79 is withdrawn from beneath the sleeve 65 which drops, carrying the ring R. Consequently, the lower part of the ring is seated against lateral displacement and its points P are correctly positioned for sewing by the sewing machine S. Dur. ing the ensuing progression of the control drum 40, the finger 44 is first moved inwards to engage the pivoted section 32 of the transfer ring R by the cam lug 40<x> on the drum, whereupon the sector 49 is actuated, as determined by the cam groove 40<a> of the drum 40, to swing the transfer ring section 32 over upon the main ring section 30 to double the loops in the points P. The lever 53 is then actuated by the cam grooves 40<b>, 40<c> and levers 55, 57, 56, 58 to reciprocate the stripper within the carrier. The ring section 32 is then restored to its original position by return movement of the gear sector 49, and the finger 44 retracted through the passing of the cam lug 40<x> beyond the pivoted region of the arm 43. The doubled fabric loops being now doubled on the points of the ring section 30, the carrier 20 is set in motion by withdrawal of the latch 59 and by the jogging of the finger 63. The carrier is rotated one tooth at a time to present the points P successively to the sewing machine S to unite the doubled loops. When the stitching is complete, the chain of stitches is cut by shears and the mechanism returned to its starting position.
