Abstract
309,626. Goss Printing Press Co. of England, Ltd., and Smith, E. J. Jan. 13, 1928. Feeding webs.-In a web-renewing mechanism for a printing-press, the joining of the new web to the expiring web is effected by bringing the old roll and the new roll, to one of which paste has previously been applied, into contact. An active roll 1, Fig. 1, and a reserve roll 2 are mounted in pairs of arms 3 fixed to cross-shafts 4 provided with worm-wheel segments 20 engaged by worms 21 on coaxial shafts 22 the inner ends of which are provided with bevel wheels 24. A bevel-wheel 25, provided with an operating handle, is mounted on a centrally pivoted lever 26 which can be held by a pin 26<a> engaging either of two holes in the machine frame, so that the wheel 25 can be operatively engaged with either wheel 24 to press the new roll, previously provided with adhesive, into engagement with the expiring roll. Yielding pressure is provided for by permitting the worm shafts 22 to have a limited longitudinal movement against the action of springs 29, and this movement may be prevented when desired by inserting collars between flanges 31 on the shafts 22 and the adjacent hearings of these shafts. The arms 3 carrv short spindles 6, Fig. 4, having bung-like ends 7 to engage the ends of the roll core, and one spindle is slidably keyed within a rotatable sleeve 9 and is movable axially, to facilitate the insertion of the roll, by a lever 14, actuated by a screw 17, and carrying pins 13 engaging a grooved collar 11 on the spindle 6. Lateral adjustment of the rolls is effected by screw 32, Fig. 1, rotatable in the machine frame and engaging threaded bores in the ends of the shafts.4. Each sleeve 9 may be provided with a brake comprising a split friction ring 35 actuated by a screw 36, or with a brake band 52, Fig. 7, actuated automatically by the varying tension of the web. For this purpose, the web passes round a spring-mounted roller 37 and round a roller 38 mounted in guides 40 and connected by a link 41 to a bell-crank lever 42 fixed to a shaft 42b and connected by a link 43 to an arm on a shaft 45 carrying a pulley 46, to which are secured cables 47 connected to arms 51 on shafts 51a carrying arms 51<b> connected to the brake bands 52. A torsion spring on the shaft 42b urges the roller 38 against the web. As the tension of the web varies, the roller 38 is moved by or against the action of the torsion spring and increases or decreases the pull on the cables to apply or release the brakes and thus restore the normal web tension. To take up slack in the cables when the arms 3 are actuated, the cables are passed round jockey rollers 48 on arms 49 loose on the shaft 45 and having a slot connection with links 53 connecting the arms 49 to collars 54 moving with the shaft 4. The torsion spring on the shaft 42b is secured at one end to a collar fast on the shaft and at the other end to a loose worm-wheel 55 rotatable by a worm 56 for adjusting the tension of the spring.
