The web roll 3 is provided with a hollow core member (not shown in the drawing) and spindles 1 and 2 are adapted to be inserted into opposite ends of said core member to support the web roll and to rotate therewith. More specifically, spindle 1 is slidably keyed within a hub 11 on brake drum-ll and said hub projects outwardly beyond said brake drum in opposite directions. As before stated, power operated means is provided for rotating shaft (3 to vary the angular position of arms 1-5 and 16 and, as best shown in Fig. 1, such means includes a motor 36 mounted upon a bracket carried by pedestal 8. Motor 36 is operatively connected to a counter shaft 37 through the medium of a spur gear 38 and a pinion 39- and shaft 6 is driven from said countershaft through the medium of a worm wheel 40 and worm 41. Motor 36 can be controlled from any desired point, such as the delivery end of the press and the same can be also controlled from a point in proximity to the tensioning device to facilitate installation installing a web roll In the motor 36 is operated to bring the spindles l and 2 on a: level with the core member of the web roll, the latter being on the floor. The web roll is then rolled into position between the spindles 1 and 2 and upon alinement of the spindles with the'core member the same are forced into such core member by means of screw 20. The motor 36 is then operated to elevate the roll to the desired position.
Also, asbefore stated, power operated means isprovided for adjusting arms 4 and 5 axially on shaft 6 to effect margin adjustments of the web roll. As'shown in Fig.2, such means comprises a motor 42 mounted upon a bracket fixed to a bearing pedestal 8 and adapted to drive a screw shaft 43 through the medium of a worm wheel 44 and worm 4:). Screw 43 has its left end rotatably mounted within a suitable bearing on pedestal 8. the same being held against axial movement within said bearing, and the right hand end of said screw extends into a nut carried by a. bracket 47. Bracket 47 is mounted upon the connecting member 9, between arms 4 and 5 by a cap member 48 and the same is held against axial move ment on said member but is free to rotate thereon. Thus it is apparent that upon reverse operations of .notor 42, screw 43 will effect axial adjustments of arms 4 and 5 on shaft 6 to effect margin adjustment of the web roll 3. i
Referring now to Fig. 4, the same illustrates a pair of web tensioning devices A and B of the character. hereinbefore described, such devices being arra-nged-side by side and in a reversed relation. The shafts 6 of the tension devices are supported at opposite ends by pedestals C, one of which devices while the roll on the other device is and that the extremity of the reserve web roll can be readily connected 'to the web proceeding from the active roll prior to exhaustion of the latter. In connecting the 'web ofthe reserve roll to the web of the active roll the press is stopped and the web rolls are brought to the position shown in Fig. 4. Paste having been previously applied to the outer surface of the extremity of the reserve web roll, it is apparent-that such extremity can be readily connected to the web proceeding from the active roll. After connection of the webs the press is started and the web of the active roll is severed. During such pasting operations the brake drums arereleased from their respective brake shoes by means of the levers 32 and after the press is started the drums associated with the new roll are moved into engagement with their respective brakes by returning such levers to-normal position.
\Vith the tension devices arranged as shown in Fi g. 4, the margin adjusting means active,
is arranged to eifect simultaneous margin adjustments of both of the devices. The con- .necting members 9 of the tensioning devices are secured together by a bracket 49 (Fig. 5) such bracket being provided with a screw threaded part 50 for receiving the margin adjusting screw 43.
\Vhat I claim as new by Letters Patent is:
1. drawn from a \veb'roll comprising means for imposing a frictional drag on sald roll and for rendering such drag proportional to the weight of said roll, said means including means for resolving the weight of said roll into component forces, one of which is effective to control such drag.
2. A-mechanism for tensioning material drawn from a web roll, comprising means for imposing a. frictional and for rendering such drag proportional to the weight of said roll, said means including means adapted to resolve the weight of said roll into component forces, one of which is effective to control such drag, said latter'means being adjustable to vary the ratio of such component forces.
3. 5. In a mechanism for tensioning material drawn fro'm -a webroll, in combination,
supporting means for theweb roll rotatable -"about an axis to one side of said roll, a brake drum associated with said roll to ro- -Tt'at therewith and abrake shoe for engag- ".Ling said drum, said shoe being adjustable to vary the angular position of said roll "with respect to said axis for variation of the "pressure of said drum on said shoe.

7.
