Abstract

308,680. Daimler - Benz Akt. - Ges. March 26, 1928, [Convention date]. Fluid-pressure.-Relates to the actuation of brakes by the vacuum produced by motor vehicle engines and particularly those using crude oil, and having an ignition chamber or direct fuel injection. Imperfect combustion and smoke emission have occurred during braking, owing to insufficient air supply, and these defects are remedied by connecting the vacuum-brake apparatus with some only of the engine cylinders the supply to which or a part of them, during braking, is cut off. A six-cylinder engine a is supplied with fuel by a pump b having six plungers, one to each cylinder. The fuel enters at e and is delivered at f, and the pump is controlled by a rack or bar c connected, through link d, with the accelerator. The induction manifold is divided into two parts g, h of which g is provided with a throttle i connected to a pedal o through linkage k, l, m. The pedal o controls through a link p the brake cylinder q which actuates the brakes through links r, s. To apply the brakes the pedal o has to be depressed, but before this can be done the foot has to depress a pedal m which closes the throttle i. This produces a vacuum in space g before the brake is brought into action by pedal o which, when depressed, closes pipe t to the atmosphere. The fuel pumps of the cylinders communicating with the space h are set for idle running prior to or simultaneously with the actuation of the brakes, but the delivery of the pumps communicating with space g is cut off entirely. The control means for cutting out the fuel pumps may be connected with the brake control gear and may act stepwise, first setting all pumps for idle running and then on further movement cutting out other pumps, a part of the linkage beink arrested. Some only of the cylinders may be supplied during idle running. The cylinders from which the fuel is cut off may be connected in groups with the brake apparatus.
