Abstract
251,955. Bragg, C. S., and Kliesrath, V. W. May 5. 1925, [Convention date]. Fluid-pressure.-In engines the, suction of which is utilized to operate a suction-actuated device, " stalling " of the engine and delay in re-starting due to weakening of the mixture by air exhausted from the device, are prevented by introducing fuel into the air admitted to the device to form a combustible mixture. The invention is described in its application to the brake-actuating mechanism of a motor vehicle but is not restricted thereto. The brake lever 72, Fig. 1, is connected by a link 73 with the hollow rod 5, Fig. 2, of a double, acting piston 3 in the cylinder 1 of the brake actuator. Valve mechanism 6 is located in the hub of the piston and is actuated by a tube 20 connected to a spring-loaded brake operating pedal 74. A flexible suction-transmitting pipe 26 is connected at one end to the tube 20 and at the other end to the intake manifold 61, Fig. 3, between the throttle valve 69 and the cylinders. The hollow piston rod 5 is connected by a pipe 80 to an auxiliary carburettor or with any supply of carburetted air, but. preferably to the main carburettor 66, Figs. 1 and 3, at a point between the fuel nozzle 66<e> and the throttle valve 69. The tube 20 communicates with a suction chamber 17 in the piston hub which also contains an inlet chamber 18 in communication with the aperture 5a and pipe 80. The tube 20 has a partition 21 separating the inlet passage to chamber 18 from the suction passage to chamber 17. Movement of the tube 20 to the left, Fig. 2, will admit mixture to the rear of the piston the other side of which will be subjected to suction, and movement of the tube in the opposite direction will reverse the connections.
