Abstract
305,167. Morse Chain Co., (Assignees of Morse, F. L.). Feb. 1, 1928, [Convention date]. Driving-chains with separate joint pins.-The effective centre of articulation of the joints is arranged to be positively moved, during articulation of the chain, transversely to the line of pull, to cause the leading link of the free run first to dip and then to rise relatively to the last link engaged by a tooth of the sprocket wheel. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, each joint pin consists of three mebers 3, 4, 5, the members 3. 4 being respectively keyed in adjacent links while the member 5 floats between them. When the chain is straight the member 5 engages at 7 with one link so that it is constrained to move with the member 4 during the first half of an articulation, after which it is engaged at 8, Fig. 4, by the other link and is constrained to move with the member 3 on the seating of the member 4 for the remainder of the articulation. A modification is described (Figs. 12 to 14, not shown), wherein the bearing surfaces of the member 5 are concave instead of convex. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, a rib 13 on the member 5a engages in a wider groove 12 in the member 4a, which thus first moves relatively to the member 5<a> and then moves with it on the member 3<a>. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown), interengaging ribs and grooves are formed at both sides of the floating member, both surfaces of which are convex. In the construction shown in Fig. 7, a cam 15 on the member 4d engages with one end of the member 3<d> and first depresses this and then allows it to rise again during an articulation. In the construction shown in Fig. 9, the relative movements of the parts of the pintle are controlled by an external cam, e.g. a cam-slot 16 in one link engaged with a pin 17 in the other link. A similar control of a one-part pin joint is shown in Fig. 11. sufficient vertical play in the joint being allowed to enable the cam 16f and pin 17<f> to act.
