Abstract

304,849. Beatty, W. E., (Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc.). Oct, 31, 1927. Cold-rolling.-Strip metal, particularly the ironnickel alloy known as Permalloy for the continuous inductive loading of alternating current conductors, is made by performing wire to strip form and then accurately sizing the strip by cold-rolling. The preformed strips 10 are supplied from spools 21 and fed through guides 23 to edge rolls 26, Fig. 5, having a series of passes so that the rolls may still be used when one or more of the passes has become worn. The strip is guided between the rolls 26 by idle rolls 27. The rolls 26, 27 are mounted in carriages which are adjustable within a fixed frame by micrometer screws. The laterally sized strips pass over channelled guide rollers 35 to grooved guide blocks 39 which are secured to the machine frame and have cover plates 43 secured thereto by cam levers 52 the cover plates being provided with blocks which press upon the strips under the action of leaf springs to tension the strip. Rolls 12 adjustable against the pressure of interposed springs 20 by screws 19 size the strips for thickness, the strips then passing by way of a grooved guide-block 53 and guide rolls 56 to spools 57 on which they are uniformly wound by distributing fingers 59. Specifications 184,774 and 189,075, [both in Class 36, Electricity, Conducting &c.], are referred to.
