Paper-carriages; carriage-shift mechanism; carriage-releasing arrangements; portable machines. -A carriage-centring lock, particularly for portable machines, is mounted on the carriage-shift frame and is provided with means for locking the shift frame or holding the feed-rack in released position or for both these purposes. In the machine shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the carriage 12 runs on a shift frame 15 and is provided with a feed-rack 17 which can be raised by means of a finger-lever 27 to release the carriage. The centring-lock consists of a single member 37 pivoted at 35 to the shift frame and formed with a finger-piece 42, a tongue 43 which is normally out of the path of the carriage, a lug 47 for locking the shift frame, and a lug 50 for holding disengaged the feed-rack. On releasing the carriage and raising the centring-lock, the tongue 43 enters a slot 44 in the end plate of the carriage and holds the carriage in centred position. Further, the lug 47 engages a flange 48 on the framework and locks the shift frame, and the lug 50 holds the feed-rack when the finger-lever 27 is released. The tongue 43 is inclined so as to cause the lug 47 to bind on the flange 48. When the cover 53 is placed over the machine, the carriage is firmly held, since the centring-lock and knob 28 prevent movement to the right and left. When the carriage is moved to the right, the centring-lock drops into the normal position by gravity, aided by the pressure of the feed-rack and, in some cases, by a spring.
