Packeting by wrapping-up. - A machine for wrapping elongated tablets with square or round ends by first enclosing them in a tubular wrapper with open projecting ends, comprises a member movable transversely of the direction of feed of the tablet, the member carrying blades for forming tucks at each end of the wrapper and retaining fingers, of greater depth than the blades, adapted to restrain the tablet from travelling after the withdrawal of the blades and whilst rear tucking members fold inwards the rear ears of the end tucks; the fingers are then withdrawn to allow the tablet to pass stationary blades to turn in the forward ears of the end tucks and complete the formation of outstanding wings. Feeding rollers A', of which one roller has a central cylindrical portion of less diameter than its end portions and the other roller is of a length not exceeding the cylindrical portion, bend the tin foil or other wrapping material A longitudinally to stiffen it and dispose it vertically in front of a plate A<3> having a slot through which a plunger A<2> is adapted to push a tablet and the wrapper to fold the wrapper about three sides of the tablet. Grippers A<4> mounted on an oscillating arm A<6> receive the package and carry it downwards along a concave face on the plate A<3>, the plate folding the wrapper upwards along the fourth side of the tablet. The grippers A<4> come to rest opposite a fixed table D whereupon an ejector E thrusts the package on to the table and beneath spring fingers F which fold a projecting part of the wrapper along the top side of the tablet. The fingers are mounted on a plate F<2> pivoted at F<3> and adapted to be displaced vertically against the action of a spring F<4>, which engages a lug F<5> thereon, to adjust itself to the depth of the tablets. In this position, a member G secured to an arm G<1> mounted on a shaft A<6>, on which the arm A<5> is also pivoted, descends, and extended retaining fingers G' thereon restrain the package from movement whilst a rear blade G<5> folds the outstanding edge B<1>, Fig. 15, of the wrapper down upon the rear side of the tablet and end folders G<6> make end tucks. The member G is raised until only the retaining fingers G' engage the package, whereupon a rear folding member H advances to fold inwards the rear ears B<2>. The retaining fingers G' are now lifted clear of the package and one of a number of projections J<1> on a chain J moves the package continuously along the table D past members K on brackets k<1> pivoted at K<2> and drawn towards one another by the spring F<4>. The members K fold inwards the front ears B<3> and leave projecting wings at each end at the base of the tablet. The ends of the tablet are pressed by rollers L on the brackets K<1> and simultaneously serrated or other rollers M, at right angles to the rollers L, press the wings. Finally, serrated rollers N, N<1>, running at the same peripheral speed as the tablet, crimp the folds to secure them together.
