Abstract

303,041. Jones, A. W., and London Valve Co., Ltd. Sept. 26, 1927. Piston valves: leakage, preventing. -In a self-closing push-operated water tap of the kind comprising a hollow perforai,ed piston valve 2, the valve is axially bored or recessed and a reduced spindle part 1 works in an annular hatshaped packing 7. Perforations 8 leading from the central bore outwardly are uncovered when the spindle is depressed whereby water and air enter the hollow space left by the depression of the spindle and form a cushion tending to retard the closing of the valve under the action of the fluid pressure and the spring 6. The valve itself works in a hat-shaped annular packing 9 the free edge of which faces the fluid pressure. The lower packing 9 is retained by a cage member 4 and the upper packing by a screwed enclosing cap, as shown. As well as the bib tap form shown, the arrangement can be ,modified for use in a tap for a pipe line.
