Fibre, treating. - Vegetable fibrous material and loose vegetable fibres are treated successively with two or more different swelling-agents, the swelling operation not being interrupted by means causing intermediate coagulation between the treatments. The material may be treated with alternate baths of different concentrated inorganic acids, with alkaline lyes alternating with ammoniacal copper oxide solution, or with salt solutions such as zinc chloride or calcium sulphocyanide combined with each other or with acid or alkaline swelling agents. The excess of swelling-agent is removed between treatments by pressing, wringing or centrifuging. Where the reagent, such as an alkaline swelling-agent, applied during one treatment would react with the next reagent such as an acid, the first reagent is removed by washing with an indifferent solvent which does not cause coagulation before the application of the next swelling-agent. The treatment renders the material woolly and soft, stiff and transparent, or in some case linen-like with or without lustre, while further effects may be produced by treating one, side only of the material. Pattern effects may be produced by applying the treatment to parts only of the material by printing, spraying, or painting with or without the use of thickeners, or by reserve printing.
