Abstract

266,466. Hausheer, E. Aug. 24, 1925. Yarns, treating with liquids; yarns, mercerizing.-In the mercerization, ornamentation, and finishing treatment of textile materials, yarns, and fabrics containing cellulose, producing effects varying from a lustrous, soft, elastic finish to a transparent smooth and stiffer material according to the extent or duration of the treatment, a mercerizing, cellulose gelatinizing agent is used, the basis of which is an 8-18 per cent alkaline lye, and the material treated therewith is then treated with a 2-10 per cent. solution of ammonia, or equivalent ammonia generating ingredients, or urea, or other carbonic acidammonia derivatives and then brushed, mangled, or scraped to 1¢ to 2 times its original weight, with or without cooling to -7‹ C. to -15‹ C. submitted without drying to a souring action with acid, and then washed and dried. The treatment may be local, producing brocade or damask effects. or it may be applied to the whole surface, and curling or crepe effects may be obtained by allowing shrinking during the final drying or by varying the tensioning in the direction of the warp and the weft. The mercerizing liquor may contain in solution up to 5 per cent of cellulose materials such as one or more of the following :- Cellulose, protein or plant pith, natural silk, agar-agar, and the like in solution may also be added. In using urea, thiourea, guanidine, or the like, these substances may be added to the alkaline lye, or they may be used subsequently. The local treatment for the production of patterned effects may be by printing, stencilling, or the like, and either white or coloured resists may be used. Grooved upper and lower scraping devices b, c, hinged together as shown, or the top member c in two parts hinged one at each end of the lower member b, may be used to remove the excess liquor where yarns are treated.
