298,583. Carpmael, W., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 12, 1927. Benzanthrone dyes.-The conversion products obtained by treating Bz I-phenylbenzanthrones with aluminium chloride (see Specification. 297,129) are converted into vat dyes by melting them with a caustic alkali or other alkaline condensing agent, such as an alkali metal amide, anilide, or alcoholate. In an example, the conversion product from Bz1-phenylbenzanthrone is heated with potash and alcohol, the excess of alcohol distilled off, and the dye isolated in the form of green flakes by dilution with water; it dyes cotton in fast bluish-green shades from a blue vat.
