Abstract
297,898. Starling, C. E. B., and Starling Co., Ltd. July 5, 1927. Windscreens. -Relates to side-screens for vehicles of the kind in which two or more panels foldably hinged together are adapted to pivot or slide into or out of a pocket or recess in the side or door of the vehicle. According to the invention the hinged panels which, in the erected position, are adapted as usual to form a screen wider than the pocket for housing them, are transferred from the operative position by first folding the panels together, and then moving the screen as a whole into the pocket either by a hinging movement and a subsequent sliding movement, or by a combined hinging and sliding movement. One of the panels is provided with a bracket or similar attachment adapted to slide in or on one or more vertical guide bars located in the pocket. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the screen comprises two panels 1, 2 hinged together at 5, and the panel 1 has attached to its lower edge a bracket 6 formed integrally with a sleeve 8 slidable on a vertical bar 9 in the pocket 24. In erecting the screen a sector-shaped projection 16, Fig. 3, on the bracket 6 co-operates with a similar projection 17 on a fixed door bracket 14 to position the screen correctly, while projections 26 on the door serve directly to support the screen. The upper portion of the pocket 24 is provided with a hinged closure flap 19 having a ledge 20 for sealing the upper edge of the pocket 24. Catches 27, 28 serve to secure the screen in the erected and folded positions. To stow away the screen, the panel 2 is folded on to the panel 1, both panels are then swung through 180‹, and dropped into the pocket, and the flap 19 closed. Modifications are described in which the folded screen is lowered into the pocket by a sliding movement in a slotted bar, the slot of which has a horizontal extension at its upper end, by a combined pivotal and sliding movement on a pair of guide rods connected to a hinged lever, and by, a combined pivotal and sliding movement, on a single pivoted bar. According to further modifications, a spring may. be added to assist in raising the screen from the pocket, and the screen may be mounted upon a lazy-tongs, which allows the screen to be raised from the supporting bracket.
