Description

Patented Aug. 31, 1926.
UNITED STATES BERTRAM 'J. GOLDSMITH, of NEW roan, n.
Y., ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
TO PERFECT WINDOW REGULATOR GORIPDRATION, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK, A. CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
\VINDOW-COUNTERBALANCING DEVICE.
Application filed July 26, 1924. Serial No. 728,311.
My invention relates to windows of the type .which are vertically slidable in any suitable frame and has for its principal object the production of a simple and effective counterbalance for the window which may be installed at small cost. v
To the above ends my invention consists in the combination with a window of the novel. counterbalance hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating a practical embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a window frame and window showing my improved device in conjunction therewith.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section on the line 22 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a portion of the window and window frame showing the window in a difierent position from that shown in Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the several figures of the drawing:
1 indicates the side members of a rectangularly-shaped window frame, 2 the upper member and 3 the lower member. Said side members 1 are provided with suitable guideways 4 suitably receiving therein a window pane 5 which may be either a framed or frameless pane as desired. The lower edge of the window 5 is seated in a channel 6 which is secured to the window in any desirable manner. Fastened to said channel 6 and depending downwardly therefrom is an angle piece 7 to which is pivoted an arm 8 having a short extension 9 extending substantially at right angles to said arm. Secured to the end of said short extension 9 as well as to a suitable hook on the channel 6 and adjacent an end thereof is a spiral spring 10 which constantly exerts an effort on the arm 8, as is obvious, tending to rotate the same on its pivot in a counter-clockwise direction.
11 indicates an ordinary lock board or other supporting plate preferably made of steel which extends across the frame from one of the side members 1 to the other and which is secured thereto in any manner. Said lock board or plate if desired may con stitute a portion of the front wall of the window well into which the window is slidable in said guideways 4. The lock board or of which is pivoted to the end of the arm 8 while the other end is fulcrumed to a shaft extending from the lock board 11 to the angle piece 13. As will be obvious, the
spring lOwhich tends'to swing the arms 8 and 14; on their pivots acts to counterbalance the weight of the window and makes it easy to raise the same when so desired.
Any suitable window lifting or locking device maybe used for raising and lowering the window or locking it in fixed position, the same forming no part of the present invention.
What I claim as my invention is: 1. In a device of the character described, a window frame, a window vertically slidable. therein, an arm pivoted to a fixed part of the window frame, a second arm pivoted to said first-named arm. and to the window at its lower edge and a spring extending from said second-named arm and secured to the lower edge of the window.
2. In a device of the character described, a Window frame including a window opening, a window slidable in said frame, an arm pivoted to a fixed part of the window frame adjacent the lower portion of said window opening, a second arm pivoted to said firstnamed arm and to said window, an extension on said second arm extending substantially perpendicularly from said arm and a spring secured to said extension and to said window.
3. In a device of the character described, a window frame provided with a window opening and with guideways in the side members thereof, a window slidable in said. gui'deways, an arm pivotally secured to said window adjacent the lower edge thereof and provided with an extension, a counterbalance spring having one end fastened to said extension and the other end to the lower edge of the window, a supporting member secured to said window frame adjacent the lower portion of said window opening and a second arm pivotally connected to said supporting member and to said said firstnamed arm. a
4. 'In a device of the character described, a window frame provided with guideways in extending across said window frame, an
outwardly extending flange on said plate, a downwardly depending nieinber 'ias'tened to said flange and a second arm pivoted inter-'- Inediate saidplate and'sa'id-downwardly depending member and also pivoted to the end of said first nained armll In a device of the character a win'do w'franie, a window slidable therein, a imetallicwindow sill supported by, said window frame, connecting means between saidwindowfsiH the lower edgeof said window and -'supported entirely by said sill and window and a springv attached -to-said-- described,
; windowi connected means and to the lower edge of said window. Y l
6. In a device of the character described, a frame, a window slidable therein, supporting ine ans tending to maintain said window in raised position, saidmeans includingan arm ivo allysuppqrted by the lower T'portimer-said window, a s ring connected to saidiarm at a point eccentric to the pivot thereof and to 881d window for tensioning these partsrand means for anchoring said arm with respect to said frame, said means being conecte'd to sald franie at a point above thepivotal connection of said arm to said window for all operativepositions of said I Si'gned at New York in the county .of- New York and State of New York this 2.5t1rday of July, A: D.- 1.924.-
