Abstract

Plug cocks.-A plug cock 1 which is subject to side thrust of the controlled fluid is balanced laterally by the provision of a recess or pocket 9 formed diametrically opposite the line of the side thrust, the pocket being in communication with the inlet fluid through a passage 10 in such a manner that the plug is balanced laterally in all its positions. As applied in connection with a four-way cock for controlling the supply and discharge of petrol to and from a pair of containers, as for example according to Specification 287,589, the passage 10 extends to the periphery of the plug on the inlet side, as shown and is of such dimensions as to be in communication with the inlet 3 when the inlet passage 7 is out of communication therewith. The axial thrust of the fluid on the plug is also balanced by means of a piston chamber 11 connected by an opening 12 to the passage 10. The chamber 11 is fitted with a spring-pressed piston 13 abutting against a screw 16 which is adjustable to vary the pressure of the spring 14 and the position of the piston.
