Actuating by liquid or gaseous pressure; diaphragm and liquid piston pumps. - Pumps for use with internal - combustion engines are actuated by the flow of a fluid which is separated from the fluid to be pumped by a diaphragm 7 or a solid or liquid piston. The actuating fluid may be the lubricating oil, the engine cooling water, the engine suction, or the engine exhaust gases. The inlet and exhaust of the oil &c. are controlled by valves 14, 15 operated by the movements of the diaphragm through spring-controlled levers 20, 21. The fluid to be pumped enters the space 6 below the diaphragm through a valve 4 and is delivered through a valve 5. In another form, the valves 14, 15 are of rotary form mounted on the shaft of a turbine driven bv the oil stream. In another form, the oil stream drives a turbine the shaft of which carries a cam or eccentric driving the diaphragm 7. In another form, the oil enters an air chamber where it operates a bevelled piston valve controlling the admission of the oil to the upper face of the diaphragm. In a modification of the last form, the admission of oil to the diaphragm is controlled by a lift valve fixed to the diaphragm and the flow of oil is regulated by an adjustable needle valve. In another form, the oil stream by injector action creates a vacuum in a chamber above the diaphragm, and a valve connected to the diaphragm periodically opens the chamber to atmosphere. A meter may be operated by the valve rod. In another form, the oil inlet valve is closed by the diaphragm on its downstroke, and the pressure of the oil then opens the escape valve. In another form, both inlet and escape valves are controlled by the diaphragm and a pressure-limiting valve is provided on the inlet side. In another form, inlet and outlet for the oil are controlled by a piston valve operated by a bellows diaphragm. In another form, the oil valves are operated by a separate piston exposed on one side to a spring and on the other to inflow oil. In another form, the oil operates the diaphragm by hydraulic ram action.
