Abstract

295,218. Bicknell, R. C. April 4, 1927. Springs, arrangement of; axle at- - tachments; equalizing load on springs and wheels.-In a motor vehicle having frame members of inverted V-section, transverse springs at the ends of the frame are connected at their ends to the axles and longitudinal springs located in the frame members have their outer ends connected to the axles near their ends. The frame comprises side members 3. 4, and end members 7, 8 of inverted channel section, the members 3, 4 being also formed with laterally extending flanges 3x, 4x. A transverse spring 9 secured in the channel member 7 is connected at its ends by shackles 10 to the front axle 1 a second transverse spring being similarly mounted at the outer end of the frame and connected at its ends to rearwardly projecting lugs 12 on the rear axle casing. Longitudinal springs 22, 23, preferably having two leaves, are connected at their outer ends to the axles and their adjacent ends are secured in a channel member 24 mounted on a transverse pivot 30 in each side member 3, 4. The transverse pivot 30 passes through a block 28 which has a vertical pivot 29 engaging a strap 26 secured in the member 24, the pivot 30 and the member 24 being loosely fitted in the members 24 and 4 respectively so that the longitudinal springs may swing slightly about a vertical axis. The connection between the longitudinal springs and the axles comprises an axle platform 15, Fig. 5, supporting a rubber block 15<x> which is connected to the platform by a jointed bolt 17. The leaves of the spring 22 rest on a casing 21, the block 15<x>, casing 21 and spring leaves being connected together by jointed bolts 19, 20, the bolt holes in the upper leaf being slotted to permit relative movement of the leaves while the spring as a whole has a cushioned longitudinal movement relatively to the platform 15.
