Abstract

293,685. Central Electric Tool Co., (Assignees of Weyandt, C. S.). July 9, 1927, [Convention date]. Reciprocating machines; field magnets. cooling and ventilating.-A reciprocating electric, motor for a rock drill or like percussion tool is formed with passages for cooling air which is supplied from a pump &c. through a flexible connection in the walls of which are embedded the supply leads of the motor. The field-magnets are formed of packs of laminations 2, 3, 4 circumferentially spaced around a non-magnetic tube 1 and having pole-pieces 6 - - 9 projecting through the walls of the tube and ground flush with them. The laminations are held in place by clamping pieces 11, 12 and end rings 16, and are enclosed in a magnetic casing 5. The windings 14, 15 are so disposed as to leave passages between them and the tube 1 and the casing 5. The armature 11 reciprocates freely in the tube 1 striking at one end against the shank 20 of the tool and at the other against a block 26 abutting on a spring 27. Longitudinal slots are formed in the tube 1 to prevent eddy-currents and may be closed or covered by non-conducting material, or may be left open, the air entering them escaping through the tool shank 20, which is made hollow, to remove dust &c. The coils 14, 15 are alternately energized by the arrangement shown in Fig. 8. One terminal of an alternating-current generator 46 is connected through conductors 44, 49<c> and a switch 31 to a common terminal of the coils 14, 15. The other ends of the coils are respectively connected through conductors 50<c>, 51<c>, to the anode of a valve V and the filament of a valve V<1>. The filament of the valve V and the anode of the valve V<1> are connected through a conductor 43 to the other terminal of the generator 46. A motor M is arranged in parallel with the above circuit and by means of a switch d can be run continuously or controlled by the switch 31 through a conductor 52<c>. In a modification the pump is driven from the same prime mover as the generator 46 and the valves &c. contained in a separate casing.
