Abstract

292,963. Tauschek, G. June 27, 1927, [Convention date]. Strip and like record-controlled driving - mechanism. - In a bookkeeping machine wherein perforated cards control the selecting mechanism, means are provided for controlling the movement of a paper web drawn past the typing-members, the web being divided into sections by characteristic perforations in such a manner that the data obtained from the cards is impressed on the section of the web of which the characteristic perforations correspond to those of the card to be interpreted. The typing &c. devices of the machine operate in known manner. The web is stretched from a spool 11 over an electrically conducting surface 12 to a spool 13, the winding of the web being effected by an electric motor 19, as described in Specification 291,098. A perforated card 1 is brought by feed rollers 2 on to an electrically conducting surface 3, thereby interrupting the contact between the surface and feelers 4. During the movement of the card the feelers 4 enter the perforations which characterize the account on which entries are to be made. Each feeler is connected to a magnet 5 controlling an armature 6 carrying a pawl which advances a sliding rack 7 by one tooth when a feeler enters a perforation, thereby bringing contacts 8, 9 on the underside of the rack into engagement with contacts on an adjacent fixedrack 10. The rack 10 is provided with ten contacts respectively connected to the bottom ten feelers of a group of eleven feelers 14 disposed near to the typing-mechanism. The perforated card 1 is fed forward until it raises a feeler 15 from the surface 3 and breaks the circuit of two relay magnets 16, 17 and the branch lead 28 of the card-feeding mechanism, so that the card is brought to rest. The release of the armature of the relay 16 closes the circuit of a magnetic clutch 18 and the spool 13 is rotated by the motor 19. When the section of the web having perforations corresponding to the index perforations on the card comes under the feeler group 14 relays 20, 21 are energized and excite a relay 23 which inserts a resistance 24 in the motor circuit, causing the web to be wound slowly. At the same time the relay 23 closes a switch 27. The web is wound until the line on which entries are to be made is reached, whereupon a feeler 25 runs on the web and de-energizes a relay 26 which closes a circuit through the switch 27 and magnet 29 and, through a branch lead 31, establishes a circuit controlling a feeler group 30. The excited relay magnet 29 energizes the relay 16 which breaks the circuit of the magnetic clutch and brings the web to rest. The feeler group.30, when actuated, oscillates in the direction of the double arrow, and on its forward movement is pressed upon the card by a spring 32, being lifted from the card on its return. The data upon the card is thus interpreted by the machine and the types actuated. Simultaneously with the typing action an angular knife 33 is operated to notch the edge of the web to put the feeler 25 into contact with the conducting plate 12 for the typing of the next line. At the end of the oscillation of the feeler group 30 a projection 34 closes temporarily a contact 35 and energizes a magnet 36 which moves the pawl of the rack 7 out of engagement, and a returning spring returns the rack to its end position; current also flows through a branch lead 37 to start the, feed rollers 2, and magnets 38, 39 are energized to break the circuit of magnet 23. Subsequently the feelers 4 leave the card and the feeler 15 is again in contact with the surface 3, thereby bringing the relays 16, 17 into their original position, the relays 20, 21, 22 having been restored to their original position by the return of the rack 7. The machine is then ready for the next perforated card.
