Abstract

292,217. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). March 11, 1927. Solidified oils.-Suspensions or pastes of coal are produced by dispersing the finely ground coal in alcohols to which are added substances, inorganic or organic, soluble in the alcohol. Suitable alcohols are methanol and isobutyl alcohol. Suitable bases are the hydroxides of the alkali metals, ammonia methylamine, pyridine, aniline and the like. Minor amounts of mineral oils may be added, especially those which contain finely divided carbon e.g. crude petroleum and brown coal tar oils. Lignite or other varieties of coal or bitumens mav be heated. The product may be used as the raw material in the process of destructive hydrogenation.
