Abstract

290,344. La Bourdonnais, Prince de Mahe, C. M. de C. de. Feb. 9, 1927. Diaphragms; loud-speakers. - A large conical diaphragm d is attached at its centre directly to the movement as shown in Fig. 1, and is supported peripherally from a rigid ring c by three equidistant lugs f, Fig. 3, formed by cutting away the intervening portions of the material forming the diaphragm. In this way it is stated that a substantial portion of the diaphragm vibrates by " piston " action whilst the remainder vibrates by flexure from the periphery. The conical diaphragm is mounted as a whole inside a shallow horn b of circular or polygonal form so as to leave an annular space, e. Sound waves are accordingly propagated from both sides of the diaphragm. The pitch of the sounds is controlled by moving the cone d relatively to the horn b, the arrangement being such that sound waves from the core do not impinge at right angles to the reflecting surfaces of the horn. The diaphragm may be built up from a plurality of conical laminae so that its thickness increases from periphery to centre; or it may be so impregnated as to acquire a graded elasticity from periphery to centre. In such cases the diaphragm may be supported around the entire periphery so as to vibrate partly by piston action and partly by flexure. The diaphragm may be made of onozote, a rubber composition described in Specification 162,176, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], the thickness of the diaphragm increasing from periphery to centre.
