Abstract
289,126. Dicker, S. G. S., (Rheinische Kampfer Fabrik Ges.). Jan. 17, 1927. Menthol; hydrogenated organic compounds, catalytic production of.-Solid inactive isomenthol of m.p. 52-53‹ C. and b.p. 218‹ C. at 760 m.m. is converted into inactive menthol (the racemate cf natural menthol) by heat treatment with hydrogen, with or without pressure, in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst, or by treatment with alkali mentholates at temperatures above 100‹ C.; the product is subjected to freezing-out or fractional distillation and the crude inactive menthol obtained is purified by conversion into its esters or ester-acids, followed by crystaslization and saponification; the liquid residue is subjected to further transformation. The starting material may be prepared according to the. process of Specification 289,125 and may, in the case of the hydrogen treatment, be mixed with thymol, menthone, or isomenthone. Examples are given of the treatment of the solid inactive isomenthol with sodium mentholate, and of the treatment, alone or associated with thymol, menthone or isomenthone, with hydrogen at a temof 160-180‹ C. and a pressure of 2-30 atmospheres in the presence of nickel.
