Abstract

The mixture of liquid and solid menthols obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of thymol is separated by fractional distillation. The fractionation may be effected in vacuo or at atmospheric pressure, the liquid component passing over first. The liquid menthol is then subjected in admixtures with fresh thymol to further hydrogenation, or is first dehydrogenated and the product then hydrogenated in the presence or not of fresh thymol.ALSO:The mixture of menthol and isomenthol obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of thymol is separated by fractional distillation. The fractionation may be effected in vacuo or at atmospheric pressure, the isomenthol passing over first. The isomenthol is then subjected either alone or with more thymol to further hydrogenation, or is first dehydrogenated to isomenthone and the latter than hydrogenated. p
