Soaps, materials and compositions for making. - Soap powders, flakes, cakes, &c. bleaching clothes &c. in presence of water at room temperature and stable in storage, are obtained by mixing soap, sodium hypochlorite, and trisodium phosphate in such proportions as to give a substantially dry product. An anhydrous crystallizable salt, e.g. soda may be added. The trisodium phosphate may be formed during the mixing from the necessary caustic soda and phosphoric acid or sodium dihydrogen or monohydrogen phosphate. The hypochlorite may be produced by passing chlorine into caustic soda solution. The trisodium phosphate and the hypochlorite may first or in the presence of soap be combined by mixing in concentrated solution below about 60‹ C. In an example 64.75 lb. of Na2 HPO4, 12H2O, 53 lb. of water, and 26.31 1b. of caustic soda solution of S.G. 1.30 are mixed. The temperature is raised to 50‹ C., and 64.68 1b. of sodium hypochlorite solution containing 10.32 per cent of available chlorine are added. The mass is cooled to below 30‹ C., and the separated crystals of hypochlorite-phosphate compound are centrifuged. 55 lb. of the crystals. containing 2.5 per cent of available chlorine axe mixed with 35 1b. of dry powdered soap containing 88 per cent of fatty acid, and 10 lb. of anhydrous sodium carbonate.
