Abstract

1,153,088. Crystalline polyphosphate. UNILEVER Ltd. 17 April, 1967 [21 April, 1966], No. 17480/67. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C5] The formation of needle-like crystals on hydration of phosphate-based compositions containing pentasodium or pentapotassium tripolyphosphate in an aqueous medium is promoted by the presence in the dry composition of 0À4-5%, by weight of the phosphate, of an acid pyrophosphate. The aqueous medium may contain an alkali which is a source of Na 2 O or K 2 O, viz. NaOH, KOH, sodium silicates such as Na 2 O.2À4SiO 2 and potassium silicate, but which may not be present in an amount equivalent to more than 23À5% by weight of NaOH. The acid pyrophosphate is Na 2 H 2 P 2 O 7 , Na 3 - HP 2 O 7 or Na 3 HP 2 O 7 .9H 2 O, or mixtures thereof. Examples of such phosphate-based compositions are detergent compositions which may be spray-dried or tableted. In the latter case the formation of needle-like crystals results in greater mechanical strength in the tablet.
