Abstract
288,196. Rowart, E. April 4, 1927, [Convention date]. Flat extended surfaces, surfacing and polishing; tools.-In a machine for grinding, smoothing and polishing plates of glass, marble, &c., the plate is traversed or reciprocated beneath grinding &c. tools which are moved in a direction at right angles to that of the movement of the glass &c. On a frame 1 are supported vertically adjustable counterbalanced parts 3, to which are pivotally connected frames 8 carrying a rail 11, on which are mounted, by means of wheels, 24, the grinding &c. elements 14. Each element consists of a frame 22 supporting rollers 21 guided by rails 12 and carrying also the grinding &c. tools 13<1>, Fig. 4a, or polishing tools 13. The tools have interengaging parts 16, 17 linked together to form continuous chain, so that when driven by motors the two runs of the chain move across the glass in opposite directions. The glass &c. is mounted on a table or platform 31 secured to a frame 30 by spring pressed bolts 32, Fig. 7, and a series of frames coupled together by parts 38 and bolts 40 are moved beneath the tools on rails 35, guide rails 37 and rollers 36 also being provided; the frames are moved by engagement of an adjustable fork 44, Fig. 8, with a moving chain 43, tables carrying glass which has been ground and smoothed being removed, and fresh tables added. In the polishing operation, the tables receive a reciprocating movement in a separate apparatus. Adjacent edges of the platforms 31 are cut away at 48, Fig. 8, and formed with a groove 48<1> to receive a spring-pressed member 49 which holds a piece of fabric 50, the upper edges of this piece being coated with an adhesive and projecting between the ends of adjacent plates of glass. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also washing of the glass. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
