Abstract

288,024. Prance, E. H. March 25, 1927. Linear-dimension gauges.-A measuring device for use in the game of bowls comprises a base with a spool rotatably mounted thereon to which one end of a string is made fast, a pointer to which the other end of the string is connected, and means for controlling the required length of string by thumb pressure. In the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, the spool 5 is mounted on a cylindrical base 1 with pointed ends 2, 3 and with a recess 6 to receive the thumb. The string is secured to the spool and is threaded through holes 8 to a pointer 9. A hook or clip 10 is provided to hold the pointer gripped between the clip and spool to the base when not in use. The screw 11 holding the spool to the base is extended to form a pivot for the pointer when it is desired to use the device as a pair of callipers. In a modification Fig. 5 the recess 6a forms a housing for a perforated spring controlled peg 14 which acts as a means for holding the string in adjusted position. The pointer itself may be used as callipers by providing it with a pivoted blade 13, Fig. 5.
